Abstract

The article provides an analysis of the first educational experience of studying the new discipline “Molecular Biology” of the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of the O.O. National Medical University. Bogomolets, shortcomings were identified, results were presented regarding the improvement of methodical support of the course, ways of further improvement were suggested. In the course of the presentation, attention was focused on the relevance of studying the course “Molecular Biology” by students, approaches to the assessment of the quality of teaching the discipline were analyzed, attention was focused on the methods of teaching the discipline: their advantages and disadvantages, the issues of efficiency and effectiveness of the organization of the educational process were considered. It has been established that the modern development of the science of molecular biology shows important achievements and significant potential for medical research and practice. These factors necessitated the introduction of the “Molecular Biology” course into the educational process of higher medical institutions and require the transformational nature of the molecular biology curriculum. This means that the program should contain the latest achievements and newest methods of molecular biology, as well as ensure a high-quality educational process based on modern pedagogical approaches and experienced teaching of the course to students of higher education in specialties 222 “Medicine”, 228 “Pediatrics”. To ensure the quality of the educational process, the teachers of the department have prepared the necessary methodological support materials for the discipline “Molecular Biology”: interactive lectures, video content of the course, situational tasks, a workbook, tasks for the individual work of applicants. The experience of teaching the course “Molecular Biology” shows that the developed methodological support has important advantages for students: interactive lectures provide interaction with the audience, involve students in discussions and debates; solving situational problems develops critical and clinical thinking, participation in scientific activities contributes to the development of critical and clinical thinking; tasks for individual work contribute to the formation of skills of complex analysis of results and independent search for information; keeping a workbook affects the formation of organizational skills and the ability to independently manage one’s own educational process.
