FORMATION OF THE NATION’S HEALTH IN THE CONDITIONS OF WAR IN UKRAINE: MEDICAL-BIOLOGICAL AND SOCIO-PSYCHOLOGICAL ASPECTS

The article is devoted to a comprehensive analysis of the impact of the full-scale war in Ukraine (2022–2024) on pregnancy outcomes, childbirth results, and the health of newborns and children in the first year of life, taking into account medical-biological and socio-psychological factors. The aim of the study is to identify key risk factors, assess changes in perinatal indicators and morbidity, determine the role of breastfeeding as a protective factor, and develop practical recommendations for clinical practice and public health systems. The methodological basis was an informal systematic review of official reports from the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and the Center for Public Health (2022–2024), materials from international organizations (UNICEF, WHO, UNFPA), as well as scientific publications in Scopus and PubMed databases (2018–2024). A content analysis of the data was conducted with subsequent aggregation. An increase in the rate of preterm births (up to 11–14%, in frontline regions – over 15%), a higher proportion of low birth weight infants, and an increase in infectious morbidity and hospitalizations during the first year of life were identified. A decrease in exclusive breastfeeding rates was observed (in some regions – down to 40–50%). The multifactorial nature of the mechanisms of negative impact was demonstrated: activation of the HPA axis and elevated cortisol levels, micronutrient deficiencies, toxic environmental exposure (PM2.5, PAHs, heavy metals), as well as the synergy of chemical exposure and maternal psycho-emotional stress. A high prevalence of anxiety and depressive disorders among pregnant women and mothers, associated with risks of impaired child neurodevelopment, was separately highlighted. The necessity of a multidisciplinary response strategy is substantiated, which includes screening of maternal psycho- emotional status, development of mobile perinatal services, support for breastfeeding, early development programs, and environmental monitoring. Protecting perinatal and early childhood health is considered a key component in shaping the nation’s health and post-war recovery of human potential in Ukraine.
