Abstract

The article presents the results of a study of the influence of assertiveness on the successful professional activity of medical students. A theoretical analysis of approaches to learn the concept of «assertiveness» was carried out. The main advantages of assertive behavior in the training of medical students are revealed. The assertiveness of medical students is characterized as the ability to persistently achieve a goal without violating the rights of others. Assertiveness is one of qualities of medical students and future doctors, as it helps to resist manipulation, build constructive relationships with colleagues and patients, encourage decisive actions, and ensure goal achievement. Assertive behavior of students is formed gradually, also in the process of assimilation of professional disciplines. Therefore, the classification of the main professional competencies of medical students when studying the discipline «English language (by professional direction)» was carried out. The conducted empirical research made it possible to establish that average indicators of assertiveness and self-efficacy prevail among students. It is shown that statistically significant differences between male and female students in terms of assertiveness were not found. At the same time, it has been proven that assertiveness has a positive effect on the self-efficacy of medical students and their professional competencies. It was found that assertiveness is the most important determinant of such professional competencies as persistence in completing tasks and the ability to apply specialized conceptual knowledge in the field of medicine. So, the study has shown that assertiveness is one of the main personality qualities of a medical student. It provides the ability to be effective in the field of one's professional activity, to work hard to achieve the goal, and to use the acquired knowledge and skills competently.
