ASSESSMENT OF COMMUNICATION SKILLS OF FUTURE DOCTORS AS ONE OF THE KEY ELEMENTS OF THEIR CERTIFICATION AT THE PEDIATRIC STATION AT OSCE-2

Modern higher medical education emphasizes not only the acquisition of theoretical knowledge and clinical skills but also the development of personal competencies, in particular communication skills. They are important for ensuring effective interaction with patients, medical teams, and families. In pediatrics, the importance of such skills increases significantly, since doctors must communicate with both the child and his parents or guardians. This requires empathy, emotional intelligence, and clarity in transmitting information and receiving feedback. Aim of the study. The purpose of the study is to study the level of development of communication skills among students during training and certification at the pediatric station OSCE-2, as well as to determine the dynamics of changes in this indicator over two academic years. Materials and methods. The research is based on the results of an anonymous survey of graduates who studied in the 2022/2023 and 2024/2025 academic years at the Pediatrics Department №2 of the Bogomolets National Medical University. The questionnaire contained questions on self-assessment of the level of practical skills, preparedness for compiling the OSCE-2, and own communication skills. Methods of quantitative data analysis were applied with the following comparative interpretation. Results. 84.2 % of graduates in 2025 decided to continue their internship in their chosen specialty, compared to 90 % in 2023. The proportion of respondents who assessed their level of practical skills as insufficient in dynamics significantly decreased (from 24.3 % to 2.6 %). 89.2 % of higher education applicants in the 2022/2023 academic year and 94.7 % in the 2024/2025 academic year consider themselves confident in possessing practical skills for compiling the OSCE-2. 90 % of graduates of both surveyed groups determined that the implemented pediatric stations are optimal for assessing practical skills. 100 % of higher education applicants assessed the possibilities of forming «soft skills» during their studies at the Department of Pediatrics №. 2 as high and sufficient. Conclusions. Assessment of communication skills is a key element in the pediatric OSCE-2 station. However, to achieve a consistently high level of mastery, it is important to implement them from the first courses, constantly modernizing teaching methods, in particular by implementing training, simulations, and effective feedback.
